Sun Kachina

Sun Kachina & Sun Face

To the Hopi Native Americans, Kachinas are the symbolic representations-in human form-of the spirits of plants, animals, places and ancestors. This is a mask of the Tawa Kachina who represents the Spirit of the Sun, Tawa-the Giver of Life. He travels the sky each day and visits the God of the Sky, who sends clouds and rain to make the crops grow. In the evening, he visits the Mother of the Universe, creator of the world, owner of the stars and the moon, whose home is located in the western ocean.
