In the book titled "The World of Spirits and Ancestors," Elizabeth Skidmore Sasser writes "When completed, and after it is consecrated by the shaman, a mask is believed to become the dwelling place of a particular spirit... A mask might visit a person suffering from an illness; after the appropriate rites were performed, the curative forces were prolonged if the patient wore an "Ikhoko" like the "mask" worn by the shaman during the ceremony." The "Ikhoko" is a pendant with a miniature mask attached.
